Admissions
Admission of Pupils to Oaklands Community Primary School
There are three separate types of school admission at Oaklands; first place, in year, and for the Autism Base. Please choose from the options below for the one that you are interested in finding out more information about. Oaklands Primary is a maintained school and therefore comes under the local authority admissions policy. Please contact the local authority if you wish to know more about the admissions arrangements and criteria.
Somerset LA Admission Arrangements
First Place
This is where parents select their child’s first school at 4 or 5. Parents need to apply by January of the year that their child should start school and should receive a letter directly from the County Council (The Local Authority) by the end of the preceding September providing information on how to apply for a first school place.
If you do not receive this letter by October, please click here: Somerset LA Admission Arrangements.
Oaklands is a Local Authority managed mainstream school, therefore the LA will deal directly with all first place admissions to Oaklands and manage the waiting list during the first term.
We hold open days in the autumn term (prior to the September when your child is due to start) and these dates are published on our website and sent to local nurseries and playgroups. This gives parents the opportunity to visit the school and ask questions prior to making their school selection.
Please watch our open day virtual tour in About Our School – New Parents & Tours.
In Year
This is where parents move children from one school to another during the school year, perhaps due to moving house. Application forms for an ‘In Year’ place can be obtained from the school or via the ‘In-year School Admissions’ link above.
Once the forms are returned and processed, the school admission officer will check to see if a place is available and contact you. If there are no places at that time, the application is passed to the Local Authority, who then process the next stage and will inform you of your options.
If an application has been refused in any year group, your child will be placed on a waiting list. This will be kept strictly in order of oversubscription criteria by the Local Authority, as the Admission Authority, and the child will remain on the waiting list until the end of the academic year. Parents are responsible for informing the Admission Authority of any changes in their circumstances which could affect their place on the waiting list.
Due to the high number of applications we receive, we can only offer a visit or tour of the school if we are in a position to offer your child a place once your application is processed.
Please note that in Yeovil there are a number of Infant and Junior Schools. If your child is in Year 2 at an Infant school, you cannot select a primary as your choice of transfer for Year 3 on your transfer form. You can, however, apply to a primary school as an ‘In Year’ application. Places can only be reserved for 6 weeks or half a term in advance. This means if you want a Year 3 place to start in a September, the earliest you can apply to the school is the Monday after the Whitsun bank holiday break. This will, of course, be subject to available spaces in the existing Year 2 classes.
Autism Base
Children are allocated a place in the Specialist Autism Base via the SEND team at County Hall. Children who attend mainstream classes at Oaklands Primary do not have priority for admission to the base.
If you are interested in a place within the autism base for your child, please speak to the special needs coordinator at your child’s current school. Your child will need to have an Education, Health and Care Plan as well as a diagnosis of autism for this to be considered.
