Year 5 Mayan Day

Year 5 Mayan Workshop
On Wednesday 5 February, Year 5 had an amazing day learning all about the Ancient Maya. In the morning, we learnt how the Maya civilisation originated and how to count to ten in Mayan - we even competed in a gameshow where both classes won!
We learnt about the different types of sacrifices and taste tested some chocolate, as cocoa beans (along with butternut squash, chillies and sweet potatoes) are one of the many foods that originate from Central America.
We got to explore various artefacts, design our own headdresses and dress up and take part in group drama activities. We finished our day by learning about the creation story and how the Gods created the Earth.
A brilliant day was had by all and we learnt so many interesting facts!
Did you know that the Maya thought they were made of maize because that is what made up 80% of their diet?
