School Council

What is the School Council?

The School Council is a peer-elected group of children from Year 1 to Year 6 who represent pupil’s views across Oaklands School. Each class has a School Council member, chosen by the class at the beginning of the school year.

What do they do?

The School Council allows pupils to share ideas on matters important to them and feel part of the school community.  School Council representatives attend regular meetings each term with Mrs Wheatley.  At the meetings, children discuss fundraising opportunities, whole school issues and raise any issues from pupils in their class.  The school councillors work hard to set a good example to other pupils in school and sometimes meet visitors and participate in special assemblies.

Our School Council have carried out class surveys about playtimes; finding out what equipment pupils enjoy and putting forward ideas for what further resources children would like to have.  They also chose a new design for their school council badge and suggested ideas for after-school clubs.

This year, school councillors are busy working with their classes to plan some exciting fundraising opportunities to raise funds for School in a Bag, our chosen charity for the school year.

School Council Aims:

  • To listen to and represent the views, opinions and concerns of pupils in their class.
  • To feed back key issues from meetings to their class.
  • To share ideas on experiences within school and how to improve these further.
  • To be a good role model for other pupils in school.
